This Horror Movie Has a Brutally Simple Ending
There’s something off about The Beyond. Scenes don’t connect the way you expect, and the whole thing has this empty feeling that sticks with you after it’s over. In this video, I break down why that happens and what Lucio Fulci was doing with it. Part of the Gates of Hell trilogy, along with City of the Living Dead and The House by the Cemetery, this movie works differently from most horror. If it left you feeling weird and you couldn’t explain why, this is what I think is going on. The Kung Fu Film Built on a Lie
Most kung fu movies build their heroes through easy wins. The Prodigal Son tears that idea apart. In this video, I break down how Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao built a martial arts film around humiliation, deception, and the danger of never learning from your losses. Leung Chang’s reputation is fake. Ngai Fei’s is protected. Only one of them is forced to confront the truth. In retrospect, I wish I went more into Wing Chun with this one. A big part of the subtext of the movie, but I was so captured by the antagonist and protagonist both living a lie. Had to attack it from that angle. If you love Hong Kong cinema, martial arts films, or character-driven kung fu analysis, this one changes how you...
When the Hero Does Nothing
Opium and the Kung Fu Master is a Shaw Brothers kung fu film that asks an unusual question. What happens when a hero with power and authority chooses not to act? There’s a moment in the film that’s easy to miss. A man who should intervene sees what’s happening around him and stays silent. This video looks at how a kung fu hero can remain morally upright, yet slowly lose the right to intervene. Not because he turns evil but because inaction has a cost. This is a different style of video for me, and it’s focused less on plot and more on responsibility, addiction, and guilt within classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema. 00:00 Intro 00:42 People Expect Him to Act. 01:56 The Town Needs Him 03:22 He Doesn’t Act 05:22 Others Pay...

How did this gentle old man inspire such SHOCKING films? | Intro to CAT III
This was originally going to be one of my extremely long videos, probably 2 hours or so in length, but I decided I needed to tone it down a bit. No idea if this video will find an audience, if it does, I'd love to dig into this topic further. Ideally, I'd love to do a video about the true crime and serial killer movies, and then I'd love to do one on the se* comedies/movies (yes, I've had to censor a few things here, trying not to get the video de-monetized and thus receiving no views). One thing I think I would have liked to include in the section about Run Run Shaw was his consistency in wanting to give his viewers whatever they...
These Kung Fu stars HATED each other, here’s why!
A new video essay from Weird Cinema! The Category III video, or set of videos as it may turn out to be, is still in the works, but I felt like the audience wanted me to return to the world of martial arts on celluloid - and the poll I did on the community page proved it - so here we are! David Chiang and Ti Lung, two of the biggest stars in the history of Shaw Brothers studio... I personally did not even know that their split was anything other than amicable, so digging into this story was a real eye opener for me. The stars of The Blood Brothers, The Deadly Duo, and so many other films that I didn't even want to speculate...
A Horror film MASTERPIECE, hiding in plain sight
Back again! Although we did promise to get into the wild world of Category III cinema, I felt inspired after re-watching The Exorcist III for the millionth time. It truly is one of my all-time favorite films and every time I sit down to re-watch it, I learn so much more about the lived-in world that this movie takes place in. It's scary, terrifying, and also incredibly well produced. A great film that deserves so many more accolades than it receives. Check it out! Yet another video essay for you all to fall asleep to! While this isn't the "weirdest movie" ever covered on this channel, I still consider it a wonderful hidden gem with a fascinating story surrounding it And with this out of...
